What to Drink Besides Water – My Top Choices

health drinks

We’ve all heard that water is the healthiest drink on the planet. While that’s true, sometimes drinking water all the time can get…well…boring.

But what other drinks are out there that are actually considered healthy? For those of you who instantly thought of diet Coke, light beer or low-sugar energy drinks, I hate to burst your bubble.

Carbonated drinks and even ones labeled “low sugar” or “diet” aren’t that great for you. In fact, some are downright terrible. In addition to having very low nutritional value, they contain a crap ton of sugar and other fillers that can cause bloating and unwanted weight gain.

So what technically makes a drink “good”?

Although people have differing opinions on this matter, most of it boils down to the ingredients and the amount of added fillers. And as always, taste matters too!

Even though there are very few drinks that compete with the healthiness of water, there are quite a few that contain nutrients, vitamins and antioxidants so you can feel guilt-free about drinking them.

Check out my top choice drinks to have when you need a little something extra!

propel water

I love Propel so much, I got it for my birthday last year

My absolute favorite drink besides water is Propel. I first discovered it a few years ago at a friend’s house and haven’t stopped liking it since. Out of all flavored waters I’ve tried, this one far outranks all of them. If I was to give it a score, this would be it.

propel ingredients

The only reason I didn’t give Propel a 10/10 on the health factor is because of the inclusion of artificial sweeteners. As you can tell from the image, however, most of the ingredients are sodium, vitamins and electrolytes.

If you’re someone who does not want to consume added sweeteners in their food or drink, I totally understand. One thing I would like to point out, however, is that despite the inclusion of sucralose and acesulfame potassium, drinking Propel has boosted my good momentum to be healthy in more ways than I thought.

  • It encourages me to drink more water
  • It makes my headaches go away
  • It’s a better thirst quencher than other drinks like Gatorade
  • It doesn’t contain any carbs or calories
  • It’s – quite frankly – a much healthier option than most other electrolyte replenishers

Overall, I’ve found Propel to be my next favorite drink besides water. Not only does it contain electrolytes and vitamins for hydration, but it also has zero calories or carbs. For the average fitness enthusiast, this is perfect for boosting your energy without drinking away your daily calories.

Just a few flavors you can get are:

  • Berry
  • Kiwi Strawberry
  • Watermelon
  • Raspberry Lemonade
  • Peach
  • Grape
  • Lemon
  • Cranberry Lime
  • Black Cherry
  • Mandarin Orange
  • Citrus Punch

If you’re wondering whether the Propel drink mix packets or the prepackaged water bottles are better, I personally like the drink mix packets. BOTH are good and taste exactly the same, however the drink mix packets are more portable and easier to customize in my opinion.

If you wanted to dilute the Propel for a lighter taste, all you’d have to do is pour half of a packet into a 16-oz water bottle instead of the whole packet. This is great for those who like to control how much flavor is added to their water.

On the other hand, if you like convenience, then picking up a pack of the prepackaged water bottles comes in really handy. Just grab one out of the fridge and go!

Powerade ZERO

My next favorite drink besides Propel is Powerade ZERO (my favorite flavor is mixed berry, however they were all out at the store). This drink is another good thirst quencher that contains vitamins, antioxidants and sodium. It’s a perfect beverage to have handy for those workouts that make you sweat.

Just like Propel, Powerade ZERO contains no carbs or calories. What’s the difference then? Take a look.

Propel   Powerade ZERO
Vitamin C 40% Niacin 15%
Vitamin E 20% Vitamin B6 15%
Vitamin B12 8% Vitamin B12 15%
Vitamin B5 50%
Pantothenic Acid 50%

As you can see, Propel contains more vitamins than Powerade ZERO. Does that make Powerade ZERO bad for you though? No. It’s just not as nutrient dense.

If I was to give Powerade ZERO a ranking, this would be my score.

One thing I really like about Powerade ZERO is their affordability. Concerning sports drinks, I haven’t found a cheaper brand.

V8 Caribbean Greens

O.K….now before I go any further, let me specify that both Propel and Powerade ZERO are sports drinks. They are excellent choices for keeping you replenished throughout the day and to have in your purse or vehicle in case you get thirsty.

V8 Caribbean Greens, on the other hand, is a juice. I personally love to drink this with my breakfast as a way of jump starting my morning. It does not contain any electrolytes, but instead includes a whole host of vitamins, antioxidants and NO artificial sweeteners or added sugars.

Yep, you heard me right. This juice is pretty awesome. At merely 60 calories and 14 grams of natural sugar per serving, this makes V8 Caribbean Greens a much better choice than the Naked drinks or even your typical orange juice. It contains so much less fillers and sugar, making it my #1 go-to in the morning.

If I had to rank V8 Caribbean Greens, this would be my score.

Additionally, it contains no added preservatives, is non-GMO and gluten free.

Now you may be wondering something…does it taste like grass?

The surprising answer is no! And don’t worry, I wondered the same thing before I first tried it. The drink itself has just the right amount of sweet taste without making the back of your throat sticky or your teeth feel nasty.

Just for reference, here’s a brief comparison of Tropicana Orange Juice and V8 Caribbean Greens per 8-oz serving.

  Tropicana OJ V8 Caribbean Greens
Total Carbs 26 g (9%) 15 g (5%)
Sugars 23 g 14 g
Protein 2 g 1 g
Vitamin C 100% 20%
Vitamin A 0% 20%

The first thing I noticed when comparing the two were how much more sugar and calories Tropicana OJ had. I know it may not seem like that much, but over time this adds up quickly! Consuming highly caloric and sugary beverages is one of the leading causes of unwanted weight gain.

My advice? Try substituting V8 Caribbean Greens in place of your morning drink. You’ll reap numerous health benefits – and might even drop a few pounds while you’re at it.

Bai Antioxidant Infusion

The last drink I would highly recommend is Bai Antioxidant Infusion. I would classify this one as more of a “healthy” energy drink. As the name implies, it contains 13.5 mg of antioxidants and 10% of your daily value of vitamin C. Additionally, it is:

  • Gluten free
  • non-GMO
  • Low on the glycemic index scale*
  • Vegan
  • Soy free
  • Kosher

*according to webmd, the glycemic index scale is a ranking system that goes from 1-100. It ranks carbohydrates on how much they affect your blood sugar and long they take to digest. A lower rating (<55) is typically better, since these foods digest more slowly and don’t cause blood sugar spikes. On the other hand, higher ratings (60+) are harder on the body as they are usually more processed and more likely to cause higher fluctuations in your blood sugar.

Bai Antioxidant Infusion also contains 30 mg of caffeine per 8-oz serving. If you compare this to your typical cup of coffee, that’s about of the caffeine content. So if you’re not typically someone who drinks a lot of coffee, this drink will give you the perfect kick to keep you energized throughout the day. Even if you’re someone who intakes a lot of caffeine, this drink is a great way to cut back (if you so desire).

Concerning taste, I the Kula Watermelon, Limu Lemon and the Brasilia Blueberry flavors. They all have a slight aftertaste, but after a while I don’t even notice it.

If I had to rank Bai Antioxidant Infusion, this would be my score.
